The last week, or couple days, or how long has it been now that i’ve been annoyed, i’m not really sure! I wanted to turn my usb stick into a computer for when we head to South America, this way i don’t have to worry about skype or my docs or my favourites, hell you understand i needent explan. Therefore, after a bit of reasurch i decieded i wanted to put Ubuntu a Linux OS onto my stick. This seemed simple enough and perhaps for some it would have been, but for me it proved otherwise.
I downloaded Ubuntu and tried to intall it by putting it on the stick and running the ISO from there. An ISO is a cd image for those of you who are already shaking your head in confusion! Running the ISO this way didn’t work, what it did do was create a Ubuntu prompt when i booted up my computer. I didn’t want this! I then read some more and found out i have to install Ubuntu onto my computer and from there it’s easy to install it onto my stick.
Why don’t i just stick with Windows apps? I reboot my computer and click on the already existing Ubuntu icon which does absolutly nothing except make me have to do a hard reboot. I then figure i have to install it on my computer through Windows. I’ve done this before, it’s easy enough, i just don’t like the option screen at the begining. Once installed i go into Ubuntu and install it on my stick, then reboot. Suddenly there is a whole new options window when i boot up my pc and to go into windows i actually have to do this twice. And the prompt to move into windows is only 8 seconds, guess how many times i forget and go directly into Ubunu without wanting to!
I now decide i want to get rid of Ubuntu, i like it enough but my girl doesn’t and i don’t need it for any particular reason. I uninstall but the two option menu’s at the begining don’t go away! I start reading again. This time i’m told to look at my existing partitions where i will find two that i don’t need, that are linux and i can get rid of them. The guy warns that it might freeze on startup but i don’t really understand the might so i take my luck in my own hands and delete partitions.
Upon restart i get the same crap with a error 22. Before anything loads, in fact as it’s telling me that it’s laoding this annoying Grub menu i get this error and that’s it! What can i do. There is no enter windows in safe mode option, there is nothing, just this error 22. I decided, with my heart in my hands to try putting the usb stick in and seeing if that still loads? Oh, thank God it does! I do more reading, i find many people with this same problem and i find myself not able to look into my girlfriends face for fear of her discovering that i fucked up the computer! Our new little Acer is having issues that i’ve created, not good!
After a poor nights sleep and a busy morrning i reinstall the programme i didn’t really want in the first place hoping this reinstalls the Grub progamme that i really really don’t want! It works, i can get into Windows again after the two prompt screens, but at least i can get in. That was this afternoon. It’s now night, it’s now right around the same time as i distroyed everything last night. I’m currently writting this in Ubuntu as i wasn’t fast enough to get to Windows! Ah, the joys of Linux….now tomorrows job, after Yoga will be to get back to at least one prompt screen. My girl looks at me, but wearily, this must be fixed!
